Another word on books!

I have read quite a few good books lately, as you have seen in previous posts. But I wanted to say a little of my opinion about books in general. Other than the scriptures of course, and books published by the church, I think we need to be careful with how highly we depend on books written by "man". Below is another book that I love and highly recommend for parents. But as I read this book, I was reminded that we need to keep our Father in Heaven involved with everything we are learning from them. I know I have pretty good kids. (At least that is what people tell me) But as I read this book on teaching children, I could see all the little things that I do on a daily basis, that could be hindering my progress on teaching my kids to be independent, trustworthy, and responsible people when they grow up. I started to get depressed about the things I do wrong! Then I remembered that I could use my Heavenly Father! As I prayed I felt comfort in knowing that I didn't have to be perfect now! And I felt better, knowing that I haven't ruined their lives! I know He will be there for them, to cover my mistakes. And I know that I can, on a daily basis, pray and work toward being a better Mom!

I'm sure it has to do with how I grew up, but I am the kind of person that wants control! It has been very hard for me to relax, and let my kids make their own choices, even if they're wrong, and let them learn from them! I firmly believe, (and it says this in the book below) that even very young kids (like Jenna's age) are very smart and capable of learning from their mistakes! I will continue to pray for the help in letting them do this!

So, my point is, I love to learn from books! And I think the Spirit can tell us which ones are good! But we need to keep our Heavenly Father involved in everything we do. Including what we read or watch on t.v. I also just read a book on Immunizations. And whatever choice I make about them, I will definitely pray to see if it's the right one!

I've been wanting to read that book...it's good to hear what you think of it. I also am the type that likes control...if I feel like Alyssa has gotten away with something I experience bad anxiety because I feel like she has gained control and my fear is that because of that she will stop obeying me and I have failed as a parent. Wow, I didn't realized that was my belief until I just wrote it. Thanks for letting me discover and share that with you!

thank you for your comment :) Yes, being a mom can be so hard sometimes! It's good to know I'm not the only one that feels that way. However overall, it's been better for me lately. I hope I keep it up ;)

I really appreciate your thoughts and how important it is to involve Heavenly Father in raising our children instead of man. I read some books on how to raise children when I was a young mother, it helped me a lot, so with what I read and with the Lords guidance it made raising my children more enjoyable and manageable. (It was still hard at time too)

I've heard VERY good things about the Love and Logic books. Thanks, again, for the insight!

Love that book, have read it probably 5 times! Chad is also a believer and reads it on his graveyard shift at times. We also have Love and logic for older kids.... wish I could find it so I can read it again. I find myself fogetting important points. Reminds me of how God teaches us actually.. on our own with our own consequences. Great books!
