I know I recently made a comment on Facebook about this, but it has not left my mind. I decided it is important enough to be put on my blog.
My sister Cynthia let me borrow this book. It was written quite a while ago, but has not lost any value in what it teaches. Dr. Mendelsohn, a pediatrician for many years, tells what everyone should know about doctors. He tells you how amazing the human body is in healing itself and how doctors usually just inhibit it from doing its job. He tells you in detail the many situations you will come across as your child grows up, and lets you know when to go to a doctor and when to just stay home and wait it out.
The biggest thing about waiting it out, is that your child's body builds a better immunity to whatever illness they have, than if they were to be put on medicine that kills both good and bad germs in the body.
He also tells how doctors are not taught about nutrition and don't know how to help you will nutrition, only with medicine. I learned this first hand when Jenna was anemic. I asked my doctor (who I love) what foods she should eat to get more iron. He said he didn't know!
The other huge thing I learned it to not be afraid of a fever. When your child has a fever, it means the body is doing the right thing to get rid of whatever is going on inside. He also explained that the body has a built in thing that won't let the fever get above 106 degrees, unless it's heat stroke, or something like it. And there is no fear of brain damage unless the fever is going up extremely fast. Just a high fever alone will not hurt the brain. Medicine for fevers can be used if your child is extremely uncomfortable, but for the most part, you should let the body heal itself!
There are so many other things I learned from this book and I wish I could tell you them all. So if you are interested in any of this, please go find this book to read! It may be at your local library!

I would actually be interested in reading that book. We grew up with a mom who doesn't believe in going to doctors. She is really into natural remedies, so I already do a lot of that stuff. I find that I hardly ever take my kids to the dr. because everytime I do they just tell me it's viral and there is nothing they can do and I just waste $20 on a copay for them to tell me there is nothing they can do.
Thanks for sharing. I'm definitely interested!
